If you are displaying a number of items at different distances,
then they will sometimes obscure one another. It is an artistic
convention to stop the edges of the items further away before
they touch the nearer objects. This does not generate the illusion
of depth, but since we have seen the convention followed in
so many other places, we will understanding here.
Unfortunately at very low resolution, the gap may be too
large, and this technique may have to be abandoned.
